Our educators

Both MPE educators are specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapists (as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists in 2017) with extensive postgraduate teaching experience.  Of 31-thousand registered physiotherapists practicing across Australia, there are only 70-specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapists.  Jesse and Ian make up two of this group.

Dr Ian Seels

Ian began his physiotherapy life in 1988 with a B.Sc. (Physio) Honours from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.  Whilst performing his national service, he obtained a M.Sc. (Physio) in 1992 from the same university.  Ian then entered the world of private physiotherapy practice for a couple of years before embarking on world travel.  He worked privately in England and then completed a year stint in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia as a senior orthopaedic inpatient physiotherapist.  He returned to England in 1994 to complete an M.Med.Sci. (Sport and Exercise Science) from Sheffield University before spending his first year in Australia in 1995 as an international student, completing a Graduate Diploma in Manipulative Therapy from Curtin University in WA.  Ian then did a 12-month locum running a private physiotherapy clinic in Launceston, Tasmania, before settling on the Sunshine Coast in 1997.  He started a private physiotherapy practice that same year, which he ran until the end of 2008 - he sold his clinic after being offered an extended-scope position within the department of orthopaedics at Nambour Hospital on the Sunshine Coast.  He remains in this position today, working across 3-different sites within the Sunshine Coast health service district.  In 2017, following much blood, sweat and tears, Ian became a specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapist and Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists, following successful completion of the clinical specialisation pathway.

Ian is the consummate armchair sporting expert and will happily discuss any aspect of almost any sport for hours on end with anyone foolish enough to express interest.  He is equally passionate about the musculoskeletal physiotherapy profession and has a very keen interest in teaching/mentoring.  His special interests are differential diagnosis and the contribution of the thoracic spine to musculoskeletal pain states.  He is also passionate about the important role of high quality manual assessment and manual therapy in the management of musculoskeletal complaints.  Ian has taught extensively around the world, including in England, Brazil, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Australia.  He, along with Jesse, has run the APA Spinal level-1 course in Queensland on 13-occasions.  He regularly mentors postgraduate sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapy masters students plus provides consultancy to private physiotherapy clinics.
